UV Fluorescence




Fluorescence occurs when a substance absorbs light or other electromagnetic radiation and emits it back almost instantaneously. When this process is triggered by invisible Ultraviolet (UV) light, it is called UV fluorescence.

When UV photons strike fluorescent atoms, electrons absorb the energy and jump to a higher, unstable energy state. As they cascade back down to their ground state, they lose a small amount of energy as heat and release the remaining energy as a new photon.

Because some energy is lost, the emitted photon has less energy than the absorbed one. In physics, less energy means a longer wavelength, shifting the light from the invisible UV spectrum into the visually striking, glowing colors of the visible spectrum.

The Stokes Shift Relationship:

$$\Delta \nu = \nu_{absorbed} - \nu_{emitted}$$

Where \(\Delta \nu\) represents the shift in frequency, proving that the emitted light always holds a different energy signature than the initial UV light.
